The community orchard planted in Ladywell Fields in 2011 is thriving but, like any orchard, it needs care and attention if the trees are to grow strongly and avoid disease.
It snowed throughout the volunteering session on 11th February, which made for a memorable occasion! We went ahead and mulched the trees with wood chip, but were not able to prune as planned.
There will be another orchard volunteering session on Saturday 4th March, 11am-12.30pm specifically for pruning the trees, and inspecting and repairing the guards as we go.
All volunteers welcome--you don't need to know anything about pruning trees as full instruction will be given. If you have thick gloves and/or sharp secateurs please bring them with you. Also, at the risk of stating the obvious, come in work clothes with robust shoes!
Here's hoping for better weather this time, if it is raining we shall need to reschedule again.
